There are a few things to keep in mind when applying to schools in New York City. First and foremost, you will need to take some tests. The good news is that there are only two required tests for admission into most NYC public schools: the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) and the New York State Regents Exam.

The SHSAT is used to determine admission into the city’s specialized high schools, while the Regents Exam is used to place students into either high school or college-level classes. If you’re not sure which test you need to take, be sure to check with your guidance counselor or the school admissions office.

Once you know which test(s) you need to take, it’s time to start studying! There are a number of great resources available to help you prepare, including practice tests and study guides. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to study so that you can do your best on test day.

Overview of Tests Required for Admission

There are a few different tests required for admission into NYC schools. The first is the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, or the SHSAT. This test is required for admission into any of the city’s specialized high schools. The second test is the High School Admissions Test, or the HSAT. This test is required for admission into any of the city’s other high schools. Lastly, there is the New York State English Language Arts Exam, or the NYS ELA Exam. This exam is required for all students in grades 3-8.

The SHSAT is a multiple-choice test that covers English Language Arts and Math. It is given to students in October of their 8th grade year. Students generally consider support from a SHSAT tutor  to prepare for the test. The HSAT is also a multiple-choice test that covers English Language Arts and Math. It is given to students in April of their 8th grade year. The NYS ELA Exam is an essay and multiple-choice test that covers English Language Arts. It is given to students in January of their 8th grade year.

Types of Tests: ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT

There are three main types of standardized tests used for admissions into NYC private schools: the ISEE, SSAT, and SHSAT.

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is a multiple-choice test administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) and is accepted by many independent schools across the country. The test consists of four sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and an essay.

The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is also a multiple-choice test administered by the ERB. It is primarily used by private schools on the East Coast and Midwest, although some schools out west also accept it. The SSAT has five sections: quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing sample, and an essay.

The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test) is a New York City-specific exam that students must take if they wish to attend one of the city’s eight specialized high schools. It is a multiple-choice test with two sections: English Language Arts and Math.

There are also a few other tests that some private schools may require or recommend, such as the HSPT (High School Placement Test), COOP (Cooperative Admissions Examination), or PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test).

Don’t confuse these tests with the SAT. It is taken to get admissions in colleges and preparing for the SAT requires a great deal of determination. Many students consider joining SAT classes online for guidance to prepare the exam.

Preparing for the Tests

The admissions process for NYC schools can be overwhelming, but we’re here to help! When it comes to preparing for the tests, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

First, make sure you know which tests are required for the schools you’re interested in. Each school has different requirements, so it’s important to do your research. The most common tests required are the SHSAT and the ISEE.

Second, start studying early! The sooner you start, the better prepared you’ll be. There are plenty of resources available to help you study, so take advantage of them.

And finally, don’t stress too much. Yes, the tests are important, but they’re not the only factor in your child’s admission into a school. So do your best and try to relax.

Getting Help with Test Preparation

There are many great resources available to help you prepare for the NYC school admissions tests. The first step is to visit the website of the test provider (NYC DOE for the SHSAT and G&T, and OLSAT for the G&T). They offer free test prep materials, including practice tests.

In addition, there are many commercial test prep companies that offer classes and private tutoring. Some even guarantee a score increase. Do your research to find a program that fits your needs and budget.

Finally, don’t forget about your local library. They likely have test prep books you can check out for free. And remember, no matter how you prepare, just do your best on test day!
